Altum Planners recently attended a California American Planning Association (APA) workshop entitled: Planning Equity and Residential Empowerment. The topic focused on inclusion within the planning profession and how to better involve a diverse community. City Council meetings that provided translators or printed documents in various languages are just some of the key examples that were provided. The lack of these items can be a major roadblock in local communities where the majority of residents are not English-language speakers and are not able to participate or fully understand the scope of items up for discussion. Moving forward, it is important for Cities and Counties to adjust how they conduct meetings so that they are able to be more inclusive. Residents have the right to know what is happening in their neighborhood and it is our job as Planners to help get this information disseminated properly.
